Course Syllabus

  1. TITLE OF COURSE: - BA1073/BT1303 - Basic Keyboarding
  2. COURSE DESCRIPTION:Three credit hours. Three hours of lecture. A course designed for students wanting a basic keyboarding and document preparation course for personal or career purposes. This course is taught on microcomputers. Additional lab time may be required. For each unit of credit, a minimum of three hours per week with one of the hours for class and two hours for studying/preparation outside of class is expected.
  3. PROGRAM AND/OR DEPARTMENT MISSION STATEMENT:The mission of the Business Administrative Technology Program is consistent with the mission of Seward County Community College/Area Technical School. The program will provide students with quality learning opportunities and experiences to meet the diverse, changing needs for the development of better futures.

  6. COURSE OUTCOMES: Upon acceptable completion of the course competencies and an average of 85 percent or higher on mastery assessments, the student will be able to demonstrate proper use of computer equipment through:
    A.Operating the computer keyboard by touch.
    B.Using proper posture and hand positions.
    C.Maintaining an efficient workstation.
    D.Develop proficiency/speed on the microcomputer.
    E.Keyboard with accuracy.
    F.Demonstrate acceptable levels of keyboarding skill on five-minute straight-copy timings.
    G.Demonstrate ability to proofread documents.
    H.Demonstrate the ability to use special MS Word functions in document processing.
    I.Correctly key bound/unbound and one-/multiple page reports in acceptable format.
    J.Correctly key business letters using block and modified block letter styles.
    K.Correctly key simple tables in open, ruled, and boxed format.
    L.Correctly key memos.
    M.Correctly key employment documents.
    N.Format Envelopes (No. 10) as recommended by the U.S. Postal Service.
    O.Format mailing labels as recommended by the U.S. Postal Service.
    P.Improve language arts skills.
    Q.Develop proficiency in spelling commonly misspelled words.
    R.Use correct punctuation and capitalization when keying documents.
    S.Develop and/or reinforce basic skills of reading, writing and listening.
    T.Develop and/or reinforce thinking skills to include creative thinking, decision-making, problem solving, and reasoning.
    U.Develop and/or reinforce personal qualities to include responsibility, self-esteem, sociability and self-management.
    V.Develop and/or reinforce workplace competencies to include allocation of resources, interpersonal skills, understanding of systems, using computers to process information as well as acquiring and evaluating information, organizing and maintaining information, and interpreting and communicating information, selecting and applying technology to task, maintaining and troubleshooting technology.
